About Jeremy Ryan
I was born in Venice, California and moved to Ventura when I was ten years old. It was in Ventura county, living close to the beach and some of the best waves in California, that I started to surf.
By the age of nineteen, I won a national surf title and that started my professional surfing career. I had the privilege of traveling around the world, surfing in some of the most beautiful locations, and competing in the World Surf League.
As I grew older, I had the realization that that I could not be a professional surfer indefinitely and I need to have a plan B. However, having a traditional 9-5 job did not sound appealing to me. I was looking for a profession that gave me an outlet for my creativity and therefore, I went back to school and studied web and graphic design, with the goal of starting my own design agency.
After starting my design business, I had the opportunity to create a clothing company, Ruett, with a close friend. Both professions have provided an avenue for my creativity while giving me the flexibility to continue surfing and competing.
However, my true passion was, and will always be, surfing. Spending time in the water is a true form of meditation for me and provides so much joy and solace in my life. I knew I wanted to provide that same experience to others. I started teaching surf lessons in 2019 and my surf school has taken off. I teach students as young as five years old to professional surfers who are competing on the world or local stage.
I have created a fulfilling life for myself where I am busy with my design business, Subtide, my clothing line, Ruett, and my surf school, SPF Surf. All three businesses tap into different parts of who I am and have given me the flexibility to work on my own hours and be my own boss.
